The Great Ocean Road, Victoria


The Great Ocean Road is an area I have had the pleasure of photographing for over 20 years and I categorically state that it is one of the best locations for photography. I can tell you that even after those twenty odd years, I still marvel at some spots:

  • Gibson Steps: Emotion is not the sole preserve of human beings, some locations are simply jazzed up with emotion and Gibson Steps is one such place. As you descend the steps, you find yourself on the beach, swept by the wind and faced on one side by a gigantic cliff face while on the other by an untamed ocean. For taking sunrise shots, this is simply heaven.
  • 12 Apostles: Scintillating and spectacular scenery that is well suited to sunrise shots. One very important thing about this location is that we will have it to ourselves for that early period.
  • Shipwreck Coast: This is located in the Loch Ard area and remains till this day, a wonderful location for taking great photographic images.
  • Otways: This is an area that has very enchanting waterfalls as well as the photographic challenge known as The Redwood Forest. In all these are great locations to take photographic shots.
  • Secret Spots: I also have some great off the beaten track locations for you, these live up to the essence of the Great Ocean Road but without the crowds.


What will I learn

During this workshop you will have ample opportunity to shoot stunning seascapes.
Due to our small group size, I am able to tutor and guide you, tailoring my teaching to your level and experience. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and processes on constructing and composing an image. I will also teach you techniques that will allow you to visually "See the Image".
Demo Nisi filters will be on hand, so if you haven't shot Long Exposures during the day, this will be a chance to try these and be guided on how to use them.

Location - Getting There

The venue for the workshop is Port Campbell and will start by 5 p.m on the Thursday.

As a photographer you will love the drive from Melbourne to Port Campbell via the coastal road provides you a lot of opportunities to whet your photographic appetite before the workshop starts. Of course, this drive is longer as a drive via the inland road is three and a half hours.
This workshop starts at 5pm Thursday at Port Campbell and will finish mid morning Sunday.
Port Campbell is 3.5hrs from Melbourne via the inland road, if you do have time then travel along the coast as it is very scenic, but it is longer.

We will be staying at the Southern Ocean Villas located in Port Campbell and you will have entire room to yourself. The villas, apart from being really posh, are also self-contained and fully equipped so you have no need to bring anything along.

I know you are going to be working hard (and enjoyably too!) throughout the weekend and deserve the best of meals. There will be gourmet meals on offer. Fresh coffee will be available and necessary before sunrise shoot and after that, cooked breakfast. Lunch is typically a light affair while a gourmet dinner is served after the evening shoot.  If you have any dietary requirements, simply inform me when you are making your booking and we will take care of that.
